The annual budget table

The annual table shows a whole year at once: every category's budget and spending for January to December, a total, and a variance for the months so far. You can edit any month's budget straight from the grid.

Where to find itBudgetANNUAL

On a computer, click ANNUAL in the Budget header. On a phone, open the Pace tab and tap Open annual table (the table is wide, so it scrolls sideways). Budgets are still monthly; this is a year-long view of them.

Read the table

  • Columns: Category, Jan to Dec, Total and Variance.
  • Each cell shows the budget in bold with the spending underneath. Spending is red when it went over that month's budget, green otherwise. A negative month (more refunds than purchases) shows as +$X.
  • The first row, Budget Total, matches the Budget page for each month: your spending categories' budgets, with what you spent under them.
  • Then comes one row per category group. Click ▶ to open a group and see its categories. Groups start closed.
  • Use the year dropdown at the top left to switch between last year, this year and next year.

Edit a budget from the grid

  1. Open a group so you can see its categories.
  2. Click the cell for the category and month.
  3. Type the amount and press Enter, or click away.

Click a category's name to open its category page.

How variance is calculated

Variance = (spending − budget) ÷ budget × 100

  • Only months that have started count: all 12 for a past year, January through the current month for this year. A future year shows N/A.
  • Example: a category budgeted $500 a month, viewed in October, has $5,000 of budget so far. If you've spent $5,400, variance is (5,400 − 5,000) ÷ 5,000 = +8%, shown in red. Under budget shows green with a minus sign.
  • No budget but some spending shows N/A. No budget and no spending shows 0%.

This year's variance includes the current month, which isn't over yet, so it reads lower in the middle of a month.

Zero spend

The Zero spend switch at the top decides whether categories with no spending this year are shown. It is on when you open the table, so you see every category, including ones you've budgeted but not spent in yet. Turn it off to hide categories with no spending this year.

How the totals match the monthly page

A month's Budget Total is the same as the MONTHLY BUDGET and SPENT SO FAR on the Budget page. Income categories and Credit Card Payment aren't in the table, because they never count toward a budget. Your Savings categories keep their own group row, showing each month's savings target and what you moved, but they stay out of Budget Total, just as the Budget page keeps them out of the Monthly budget.

Common questions

Is there a separate yearly budget?

No. The annual table shows your twelve monthly budgets side by side. Editing a cell changes that one month.

Why is this year's variance so low?

It includes the current month, which still has days to go, so spending hasn't caught up with the full month's budget yet.

A category I budgeted is missing from the table.

Check that Zero spend is on (it is when the table opens). With it off, the table hides categories with no spending this year, even if they have a budget. Also make sure its group is open.

Why isn't my Savings group in the Budget Total?

Savings amounts are targets, not spending limits. The Budget page keeps them out of the Monthly budget, and the annual table does the same. They still show in the Savings group row.
