Budget category detail

Click a category row on the Budget page, or tap it on a phone, to open its details: how this month compares with your last six months, a small history chart, and the month's transactions, which you can edit right there.

Where to find itBudget

On a computer the row opens in place. Only one is open at a time, so clicking another row closes the first, and clicking the open row again closes it. On a phone the row lifts into a raised card. Clicking the budget amount edits the budget instead, so click the name or the empty space.

Spending gauge

A horizontal track that runs from your lowest to your highest monthly spending in this category over the last six months.

  • The coloured fill shows this month's spending so far.
  • The shaded Average Range is your usual band: the six-month average, plus or minus half a standard deviation.
  • A dashed purple marker shows the Projected End of Month.
  • The dot is green at or below your usual range, yellow inside it, and red above it. Hover for the amounts.

The gauge always looks at the current month, so it is most useful while you are viewing this month.

Six-month history

A small bar chart of the six months ending with the month you are viewing. That month's bar is darker. The dashed line is the average, with its amount on the right. Hover or tap a bar to see its amount.

On a phone, the card also lists the 6-month average and, for the current month, your Daily pace:

Daily pace = spent this month ÷ today's date

  • $210 spent in Groceries by the 14th is $15/day.

Edit a transaction from the budget

Under TRANSACTIONS you see every transaction in the category for the month, newest first, with the date, name and amount. Refunds show in green with a +.

  1. Click a transaction.
  2. Change the name, the category or the amount.
  3. Click Save, or Cancel to leave it as it was.

Moving a transaction to another category updates both rows and all the totals straight away. This is the quickest way to fix a miscategorized charge that is pushing a budget over. For labels, notes and splitting, use the Transactions page; see Edit a transaction.

The full category page

For a longer history and the "this month against your usual" chart, open the category's own page. On a computer, click its slice in the donut chart on the Budget page, or its name in the annual table. Alerts about a category open the same page. See A category's detail page.

Common questions

How do I close the details?

Click the same row again. Opening another row also closes the first.

Can I change a transaction's category from the Budget page?

Yes. Open the category, click the transaction, choose the new category and click Save. Every total updates immediately.

What is the Average Range on the gauge?

Your six-month average for the category, plus or minus half a standard deviation. Spending inside it is normal for you.

Why is Daily pace missing?

It only shows for the current month, on a phone.
