Ask Fiyr: questions about your money, answered

Ask Fiyr is a chat that answers questions about your own money: spending, budgets, net worth, goals, FIRE and "what if" decisions. It reads your FIYR data to answer, never changes your transactions, budgets or accounts, and keeps each conversation so you can come back to it.

Where to find itAsk Fiyr

On a computer, Ask Fiyr sits near the top of the sidebar, and there is also an Ask Fiyr tab tucked into the bottom-right corner of most pages that opens a smaller chat panel. On a phone, tap More and it is the first card at the top. You can also pin it to your tab bar from More with Edit tabs.

Ask your first question

  1. Open Ask Fiyr.
  2. Pick one of the suggested questions, or type your own in the box that says "Ask about your finances…".
  3. Press Enter to send. Shift+Enter adds a new line.
  4. Watch the answer arrive. While Fiyr looks things up you may see small labels like Pulling transactions or Calculating totals, and "Building chart…" when it is drawing a chart.

On the full page, the suggestions come as a scrolling wheel of questions. Tap the one in the middle to ask it, or tap any other to bring it to the middle. The smaller corner panel shows four suggestions instead.

Ask Fiyr

Your spending, budget, goals, and FIRE, answered.

Ask about your finances…
Pick a suggested question to see how an answer looks. The numbers are sample data.

What it can answer

  • Spending: totals by category or group for any period, month-by-month trends (12 months by default, up to 36), and searches like "everything at Costco over $100 this year".
  • Budgets: how you are tracking against your budget for this month or any other month.
  • Net worth: your current net worth, assets and loans, and a projection forward (20 years by default, up to 50). It can also work backwards, for example "When do I hit $1M?".
  • FIRE and goals: your FIRE number and date, with "what if" changes to your savings rate, retirement age, Social Security age or return. Also your savings goals and Safe to Spend.
  • Recurring and rules: your recurring bills and income, and the transaction rules you have set up.
  • Accounts: balances of your linked accounts and your credit utilization.
  • Home questions: how much home you can afford, monthly payments, refinancing and home equity lines.
  • Decisions: "Can I afford…", "Should I…" and "What if…" questions, which come back as a decision report.
  • Charts: ask it to chart something ("Chart my spending by category") and it draws one in the reply.
  • How FIYR works: questions about features and how numbers are calculated.

What it reads, and what it can never do

Ask Fiyr does not upload your whole account to an AI. For each question it runs read-only lookups on your FIYR data, only for what that question needs: for example, your transactions for a date range, or your current balances. The results of those lookups, along with your conversation, are sent to Claude, the AI model made by Anthropic, which writes the answer.

  • It only sees your own FIYR account.
  • It cannot move money, edit transactions, change categories or budgets, or see your bank login.
  • It only knows what FIYR knows. If an account is not linked or added in FIYR, it cannot see it.
  • The one thing it can create is a Dashboard report, and only when you ask it to.

Your saved conversations

Every conversation is saved to your account automatically once Fiyr replies. The title is your first question.

  1. On the full Ask Fiyr page, click History at the top.
  2. Click a conversation to reopen it and keep going.
  3. To delete one, click the trash icon on its row. It is removed permanently, straight away.
  4. Click New to start a fresh conversation.

History shows your 50 most recent conversations. Deleting is one conversation at a time, and there is no setting to stop conversations being saved. If you start a chat in the corner panel, use its "Open full page" button to carry it over to the full page.

The daily allowance

Each account has a daily allowance for Ask Fiyr. When you reach it you will see "That's today's Ask Fiyr" in place of an answer. The allowance resets at midnight UTC, not your local midnight. In the US that is late afternoon or evening (5pm Pacific, 8pm Eastern during daylight saving time).

If you want to keep going, the Connect your own AI button on that card takes you to Settings, Connected Apps, where you can connect FIYR to Claude or ChatGPT. That runs on your own AI account, so FIYR's daily allowance does not apply there.

If you do not see Ask Fiyr

  • Ask Fiyr needs an active subscription or free trial. If your subscription has lapsed, see what happens when a subscription ends.
  • It is not available on the shared demo account.
  • Some older accounts do not have Ask Fiyr switched on yet. If you are subscribed and still do not see it, email support@fiyr.app and we will turn it on.

Common questions

Which AI does Ask Fiyr use?

Claude, the AI model made by Anthropic. FIYR calls it from our servers with the results of read-only lookups on your account.

Can Ask Fiyr change my transactions or move money?

No. It can only read your FIYR data. The one thing it can create is a Dashboard report, and only when you ask for one.

How do I delete a conversation?

On the full Ask Fiyr page, click History, then the trash icon on the conversation. It is deleted permanently. Conversations are deleted one at a time.

When does the daily limit reset?

At midnight UTC each day, which is 5pm Pacific or 8pm Eastern during daylight saving time. For more questions, connect FIYR to your own Claude or ChatGPT from Settings, Connected Apps.

How far back can it look?

Spending trends cover 12 months by default and up to 36. Transaction searches can use any date range. What-if decisions use your last 90 days of everyday spending plus your recurring bills and balances.
