Savings goals
Goals are envelopes for money you're setting aside. They don't link to a bank account and no money moves: you record what you've saved, tag purchases you make from it, and FIYR keeps that money out of Safe to Spend.
On a phone, open More, then Goals if it is not one of your tabs. The button there reads + Goal.
Create a goal
- Click + Add Goal. The New Goal window opens.
- Pick an emoji (🎯 by default) and a colour.
- Enter a Goal Name (for example, Hawaii Trip) and Goal Amount.
- Choose a type. Fixed has a start and end date (From and To are required). Flexible is ongoing, with no dates.
- Turn on any options you want: Auto Save, FIRE Chart (shows the goal on your FIRE chart) and, for Fixed goals, Recurring.
- Click Create Goal. It starts at $0 saved.
Add money to a goal
A goal's Saved amount only changes when you change it. Four ways:
- Type it. Click the goal, edit Saved, then click Save Changes.
- Drag to fund (desktop). Drag the Safe to Spend number onto a goal, enter an amount and click Fund Goal. It won't let you fund more than your Safe to Spend.
- Catch Up. If a Fixed goal is behind schedule, its window shows 'Behind by $X' and a Catch Up button that adds the shortfall.
- Auto Save. See below.
Spend from a goal
When you buy the thing you saved for, tag the transaction to the goal so the money comes out of the envelope:
- Open Transactions and find the purchase.
- Click the 🎯 column header to widen it (its tooltip reads Spend from Goal).
- Pick the goal in that row. Each goal shows how much is available in it.
On a phone, open the transaction and choose the goal in its edit sheet. To undo, pick Don't Spend From Goal.
Tagging adds to the goal's Spent. It does not raise its progress: progress is about what you saved, not what you spent. A goal is greyed out in the list when what is available in it (Saved − Spent) is less than the transaction.
How progress is calculated
Progress = Saved ÷ Goal Amount (capped at 100%)
- Remaining
- Goal Amount − Saved, never below $0.
- Spent
- The total of transactions you tagged to the goal.
- Net
- Saved (up to the goal amount) − Spent. On the bar, the striped part is spent and the solid part is what is left.
- $X/day to finish
- Remaining ÷ days until the end date.
- Behind by
- For Fixed goals: where a straight line from start date to end date says you should be, minus Saved. Shown when you are more than $1 behind and days remain.
Example: $6,000 for a trip, 240 days long, 120 days in. You should have $3,000 by now. With $2,150 saved you are behind by $850, and you need $3,850 ÷ 120 = about $32/day to finish.
Auto Save
Auto Save keeps a Fixed goal on its straight-line schedule for you. Each time you open the Goals page, any goal that is behind is topped up to where the schedule says it should be. It runs only when:
- the goal is Fixed with both dates set,
- today is between the start and end date (the end date counts),
- the goal is not archived.
Because Auto Save runs when you open Goals, the Saved amount catches up on your next visit, not in the background. As Saved rises, your Safe to Spend falls by the same amount.
Recurring goals
A Fixed goal with Recurring on repeats after its end date with the same length and amount, starting again at $0 saved. Choose when it stops under Ends: Forever, On Date, or After # occurrences.
Edit, archive or delete
Click any goal to open it. You can change the emoji, Goal Amount, Saved, the dates and the options, and see the transactions tagged to it. Click Save Changes when you are done.
- Archive
- For a goal you finished or gave up on. Any unspent balance goes back to your Safe to Spend and the goal stops auto-saving. Archived goals sit under Archived at the bottom of the list. Open one and click Unarchive to bring it back.
- Delete
- Removes the goal permanently. This can't be undone. Transactions you tagged to it lose the tag but keep their category and still count as spending.
Common questions
Does a goal track one of my bank accounts?
No. Goals are virtual envelopes. Saved changes only when you type it, drag in Safe to Spend, use Catch Up, or Auto Save runs.
I tagged a transaction to my goal and the progress did not go up. Why?
Tagging records spending from the goal. It adds to Spent and lowers what is available, but progress only counts what you saved.
Why is my goal greyed out when I tag a transaction?
What is available in the goal (Saved minus Spent) is less than the transaction amount. Add money to the goal first.
Auto Save didn't add anything. Why?
Auto Save runs when you open the Goals page, only for Fixed goals with both dates set, while today is inside those dates, and only if the goal is behind schedule.
How do I rename a goal?
Goal names can't be changed after creation. Create a new goal with the name you want and archive the old one.
Should I archive or delete a finished goal?
Archive. It releases any unspent money back to Safe to Spend and can be undone. Delete is permanent.
