Recurring bills and income
Recurring finds your regular bills and subscriptions from your past transactions, then tracks each month which ones are Paid, Past Due or Upcoming. Bills live here; recurring income such as paychecks lives on the Income page.
On a phone, open More, then Recurring if it is not one of your tabs.
Find your recurring bills
- Open Recurring and click Find Recurring Transactions (with the 🔍 in the sidebar).
- Review the list. Each result shows how often it repeats and how sure FIYR is. You can change the frequency before adding it.
- Click ADD on the ones you want. FIYR creates the rule and links all of its past charges.
- To see weaker matches, click Show results with lower confidence scores.
FIYR also suggests rules it is very sure about in the Recurring? card in the sidebar. Click ✓ to add one or × to dismiss it.
How detection works
Detection looks only at spending that is not already part of a rule:
- It groups transactions by merchant, using the first word of the name. PayPal and Zelle payments are grouped by the person or merchant behind them, and by exact amount.
- It needs at least two charges, then looks at the gaps between them. The most common gap decides the frequency.
- It skips merchants that seem to have stopped: no charge for two or three cycles.
- The expected amount is the average of the charges, so bills that vary (like utilities) still work. The next date is the last charge plus one cycle.
- A confidence score starts at 100% and drops for amounts that vary a lot, only two charges, irregular gaps, or a charge that is overdue. Results under 70% are tucked behind the lower-confidence button. Results at 90% or higher can appear in Recurring?.
Frequencies
| Frequency | Gap between charges (days) | Counts as paid if it lands within |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 6 to 8 | 2 days |
| Every 2 weeks | 13 to 15 | 3 days |
| Monthly | 26 to 33 | 5 days |
| Every 2 months | 55 to 63 | 10 days |
| Every 3 months | 86 to 94 | 10 days |
| Every 6 months | 174 to 186 | 10 days |
| Annually | 350 to 380 | 15 days |
Paid, Past Due and Upcoming
The top of the page covers the current month: "N of M paid", a reminder of what is still to come, the Monthly Progress bar and This Month's Charges.
- Paid
- A charge linked to the rule this month. It shows the real amount and a green check.
- Past Due
- An expected date that has passed with no linked charge within the window in the table above. It shows a red ! and "Past due".
- Upcoming
- An expected date from today on. It shows the rule's expected amount, faded, with an empty circle.
The month total is everything paid, past due and upcoming. The progress bar is paid ÷ total.
New charges link themselves
When a new charge arrives, FIYR attaches it to a rule when the merchant's first word matches the rule and the charge falls in the expected window (for Monthly, 26 to 35 days after the last one). The amount does not have to match. The rule's next date then moves forward one cycle.
Add a bill from Transactions
To start tracking a bill FIYR did not find, or attach a charge it missed:
- Open Transactions and click the recurring cell at the left of the row (it shows ↻ when the transaction is already linked).
- Either choose a rule under Add to an existing spending rule: and click ✓, or name a new one under Create a new spending rule:, pick a Frequency and click +.
On a phone, open the transaction and tap Recurring Rule. On desktop, to unlink a charge, open the same window and click Remove From Rule.
On a rule card on the Recurring page, Find Similar Transactions looks for other charges that belong to that rule. Click Add or Add All.
Recurring income
Income works the same way but lives on the Income page. If you open the recurring window on an incoming payment from Transactions, the options read Add to an existing income rule: and Create a new income rule:, and the rule appears under Income, not on Recurring.
Edit, pause or delete a rule
Click a rule card to expand it. It shows how many times the bill occurred, the total and the range, plus a yearly breakdown and a link to cancel the service where FIYR knows one.
- Click the name, amount, date or frequency to edit it. Renaming changes the label on every linked transaction.
- Switch a rule to Inactive to stop counting it but keep its history. Turn on Show Inactive Rules to see those.
- Click × next to a single charge to remove it from the rule. FIYR will not link that charge again.
- Click × next to the name to delete the rule. Its charges are unlinked and become Not Recurring.
Common questions
How does FIYR find my subscriptions?
It groups your past spending by merchant, looks for charges that repeat at a regular gap, and gives each a confidence score. Results under 70% are hidden behind Show results with lower confidence scores.
A new charge didn't attach to its rule. What do I do?
Auto-linking needs the same first word in the merchant name and a date inside the cycle window. Charges you removed with × are never relinked. Attach it from Transactions: click the row's recurring cell and choose the rule.
Why is a bill marked Past Due when I paid it?
No linked charge landed within the window (5 days either side for Monthly). The charge may be unlinked, or the rule's date may be off. Link the charge from Transactions or edit the date on the rule card.
Where are my paychecks?
Recurring income is on the Income page, not Recurring.
Does the amount have to match each month?
No. Rules link by merchant name and date. The expected amount is an average, so variable bills like utilities work.
How do I stop tracking a subscription?
Switch the rule to Inactive to keep its history, or delete it to unlink its charges. To cancel the service itself, use the cancel link on the rule card or contact the company.
