Edit, sell, archive or delete an asset or loan
Every asset and debt has a ⋯ menu with Edit details, Mark as sold…, Archive and Delete. They look similar but do very different things to your net worth: archive keeps the value, sold drops it from the sale date, delete erases it everywhere.
Quick comparison
| Action | Net worth today | Past history | Can you undo it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archive | Still counts | Unchanged | Yes: Unarchive |
| Mark as sold… | Drops out ($0) | Kept up to the sale date | Yes: Undo sale |
| Paid off (with a sale) | Loan drops to $0 | Kept up to the payoff date | Yes: Undo payoff |
| Delete Permanently | Removed | Removed from every month | No |
Change today's value
Click the amount on the right of a row, type the new value and press Enter (or click away). This sets this month's value and leaves past months alone. For a debt, keep the minus sign.
Edit details
Open ⋯ and choose Edit details. The row opens an editor with Name, the class, Purchase Date, Current Value and Purchase Value. Loans also have Loan Term (months), Monthly Payment, Interest Rate, Loan Start Date, a read-only Calculated P&I and an expected payoff date. Assets have the Liquid Asset checkbox. Click Save changes.
- Renaming also renames the matching label, so tagged transactions keep counting.
- Moving Purchase Date later removes every history value before the new date.
- Moving Purchase Date earlier adds monthly values back to the new date.
- Crypto: changing Quantity refetches the price and updates the value.
- To change what something is worth today, click the amount on its row (above) rather than the editor's Current Value.
Mark an asset as sold
Use this when you sell a car or home, or close out anything you no longer own.
- Open ⋯ on the asset and choose Mark as sold….
- Set the Sale date (today by default) and Sale price (the current value by default). FIYR shows the gain or loss against what you paid.
- If FIYR finds the loan that goes with it, tick "Also mark … as paid off on the sale date" to close the loan too.
- Click Mark as sold.
History before the sale date is kept, the item is $0 from the sale date on, and it moves out of the list (it shows a "sold" tag under Show Archived & Sold). The cash from the sale shows up in your net worth when it lands in your bank account, so nothing is counted twice.
If the dialog doesn't offer to close the loan, pay it off yourself: click the loan's amount and type 0. That records $0 for this month and keeps its past.
Archive
Archive hides a row from its group but keeps counting its value in your net worth, totals and chart. It is for tidying the list, for example an account you rarely look at. To see archived rows again, turn on Show Archived & Sold (N) at the bottom of the list; open ⋯ and choose Unarchive to put one back.
Delete
- Open ⋯ and choose Delete.
- Read the dialog and click Delete Permanently. (Archive Instead archives it; remember that archived items still count.)
Delete removes the item and all of its history, so every past month of your net worth chart changes. It also deletes the label with the same name. It can't be undone.
Undo a sale or payoff
Turn on Show Archived & Sold, open the item's ⋯ and choose Undo sale (or Undo payoff). FIYR restores its exact value and history from before. Undoing a sale also undoes the loan payoff it made.
Accounts from a bank you unlinked
When you unlink a bank, its accounts can show "Closed … when its bank link was removed" and drop out like a sale. Undo close brings one back. See Unlink a bank.
Common questions
I sold my car. What should I do?
Open ⋯ on the car, choose Mark as sold…, and enter the sale date and price. Tick the box to mark its loan paid off if FIYR offers it. The car stays in your history before the sale and drops out after.
Will deleting an asset change my past net worth?
Yes. Delete removes all of its history, so past months change. Archive and Mark as sold keep the past.
Does archiving remove an account from my net worth?
No. Archived items still count. Set the value to $0, mark it sold, or delete it to take it out.
I paid off a loan early. How do I record it?
Click the loan's amount on the Net Worth page and type 0. It records $0 from this month and keeps its history.
