Net worth goal, pace and milestones

FIYR sets your net worth goal automatically to the next round milestone above where you are, shows your progress, estimates when you'll reach it at your current pace, and records how long each past milestone took.

Net Worth Goal

Your goal is the next milestone on this ladder above your current net worth:

$1k, $2.5k, $5k, $10k, $25k, $50k, $100k, $200k, $250k, $500k, $1M, $2M, $2.5M, $5M, $10M, $20M, $25M, $50M, $100M.

Progress = (net worth − last milestone passed) ÷ (goal − last milestone passed)

  • Example: at $186,000 the last milestone passed is $100k and the goal is $200k, so progress is $86,000 ÷ $100,000 = 86%.
  • Progress is kept between 0% and 100%. Below $1,000, progress counts from $0.

The card reads "$186,000 / $200,000". You can't set a custom goal here yet. For a target of your own, try Savings goals or your FIRE number.

At your current pace

Months to goal = (goal − net worth) ÷ MONTHLY, rounded up

  • MONTHLY is the Monthly rate card, the average change per month over the range selected on the chart. Change the range and the date moves.

Example: $14,000 to go at $2,500 a month is 5.6 months, rounded up to 6, so the card says "You'll hit $200k by" the month six months from now. The card only shows while your monthly average is above $0.

After a few days, a line under it compares today's estimate with the one from about three weeks ago: "▲ 12 days earlier than 3 weeks ago" in green, "▼ … later" in red, or "Holding steady since …".

Debt Free

Shown when you have any debt. It reads "$X remaining" (all your debts added up) and its bar is 100% minus your Debt-to-Asset ratio. With $260,000 owed against $485,000 of assets, Debt-to-Asset is 53.6% and the bar is at 46%. It compares debt with assets; it doesn't track how much of each loan you've paid off. For a single loan's payoff progress, see its amortization schedule.

Milestones

FIYR walks through your net worth month by month and notes the first month you crossed each milestone. The card shows the last two steps and how long each took, for example "$50k → $100k 1y 4mo", plus the step you are on now in purple: "$100k → $200k 7mo so far".

Milestones come from your history, so deleting items or editing past months can change them. A history that was filled in when you added old assets counts as real history here.

Common questions

How is the Net Worth Goal set?

Automatically: it is the next round milestone above your current net worth, such as $100k, $200k, $250k, $500k or $1M.

Can I set my own net worth goal?

Not on the Net Worth page yet. Savings goals and the FIRE page let you set your own targets.

Why did my goal date jump?

The date uses your average monthly change over the chart range you selected. A different range, a big month, or a new item can move it.

Why don't I see the pace card?

It only shows when your average monthly change for the selected range is above $0.
