Labels: tag transactions across categories
Labels are tags you can add to any transaction, as many as you like, on top of its one category. Use them for trips, shared costs, reimbursements or taxes. Two labels are built in: review and ignore.
vacation totals $1,192.40: the charges you tagged minus any incoming money with the same label. Ignored transactions stay on the list but are left out of the total.
Built-in and protected labels
- review
- Flags a transaction to come back to. The row gets a red outline and appears in Review > Review Label.
- ignore
- Leaves a transaction out of every total. See Keep a transaction out of your totals.
- Auto-generated
- When you add an asset or a loan, FIYR creates a label with its name. Tag transactions with it to record contributions to an asset or payments on a loan. See Add an asset and Add a loan.
Protected labels show 🔒 and cannot be changed or deleted.
Create a label
- Open Settings > Labels (on a phone, More > Settings > Labels).
- Type a name in New label name....
- Click + Add Label.
You can also create one while tagging: in a transaction's label menu, type the new name and choose Add "...". It is created and applied in one step.
Tag transactions
- One transaction (computer): click the 🏷️ column header on the Transactions page, click the row's label area, and tick labels on or off. Type in Search labels... to find one.
- One transaction (phone): tap the row, tap pills under LABELS, then Save Changes.
- Many at once: Edit Multiple > Add Labels. See Edit many transactions at once.
- Automatically: a rule with the Add Label action. See Transaction rules.
- On category and label pages, click the Labels cell of a row.
Describe, archive or delete a label
In Settings > Labels, click ⋯ next to one of your labels:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Edit description | Adds a short note. It shows when you hover the label on a transaction. |
| Archive | Hides the label from every label menu, including the rule editor. Transactions keep it. Use Restore to bring it back. |
| Delete | Removes the label from your list. Transactions that already have it keep it, but you can no longer pick it. FIYR suggests Archive instead. |
Renaming a label
Labels cannot be renamed. To switch to a new name:
- Create the label with the new name.
- On the Transactions page, search the old label name. Search matches labels.
- Click Edit Multiple, then Select All. Under Add Labels pick the new label, and under Remove Labels pick the old one. Save, then Confirm Changes.
- Archive or delete the old label in Settings > Labels, and update any rule that adds it.
A label's page
Type a label name into the sidebar Search (⌘K or Ctrl+K) to open its page. The header shows the total and the number of tagged transactions for the period you pick.
Label total = tagged charges − tagged incoming amounts (ignored ones left out)
- A $1,600 trip with a $400 Venmo payback tagged the same label totals $1,200.
Below are Spending Flow (the label, then its top categories, then their top merchants; it needs at least 3 tagged purchases), a monthly chart, a donut, a yearly breakdown and the editable list. The ignore label's page shows the list only.
Common questions
What is the difference between a label and a category?
A transaction has one category but can have any number of labels. Categories drive budgets; labels are extra tags that cut across categories.
Can I rename a label?
No. Create a label with the new name, add it to the transactions with the old one (search the old name, then Edit Multiple), and archive the old label.
What happens to transactions when I delete a label?
They keep the label, but it disappears from your label menus. Archive is usually the better choice.
How do I total a trip or a project?
Tag every related transaction with one label, including any money someone paid you back, then open the label's page with ⌘K / Ctrl+K search.
