Where to find itTransactions⋯Import CSV

Import is on a computer only; the ⋯ menu is not shown on a phone.

Import a file

  1. Open Transactions and click the ⋯ button (Transaction tools) in the row under the chart.
  2. Choose Import CSV and pick a .csv file.
  3. In Map CSV Columns, choose which column of your file holds each field. Columns named exactly name, amount, date, category, labels or id are picked for you.
  4. Click Import. If a required field has no column, it says "Please select a column".
  5. If your file uses categories FIYR does not have, Map CSV Categories asks you to pick one of yours for each, then click Save. Any you leave unmapped become Uncategorized.
  6. A progress bar counts the rows as they import. The new transactions appear on the Transactions page.

Matching IDs update existing transactions. Leave blank to create new.
Pick a sample file or paste your own, map the columns, then click Import to see which rows would import and how each amount is read.

The fields

FieldRequiredWhat FIYR expects
NameYesThe merchant or description. Blank becomes "No Name".
AmountYesA plain number such as 12.50 or -3200. No $ sign and no thousands commas. Positive = money out (spending), negative = money in (income or a refund).
DateYes2026-09-03 (year-month-day) or US month-first 9/3/2026, 09/03/2026 or 9/3/26.
CategoryYesA category name. Matching ignores capitals. Blank becomes Uncategorized.
LabelsNoOne or more labels, comma-separated inside one quoted cell, such as "Vacation, Europe".
IdNoMatching IDs update existing transactions. Leave it blank to create new ones.

A file that imports cleanly looks like this:

datenameamountcategorylabels
2026-09-03Blue Bottle Coffee6.50Coffee & Tea
09/05/2026Paycheck-3200.00Payroll Income
2026-09-07Airbnb Lisbon412.80Hotels & Lodging"Vacation, Europe"

Saved as a .csv file, the last row reads 2026-09-07,Airbnb Lisbon,412.80,Hotels & Lodging,"Vacation, Europe".

Getting a bank export ready

  • The first row must be the column names.
  • Check the sign. Many banks show spending as negative. FIYR reads negative as money in, so flip the sign of the amount column in a spreadsheet first (multiply by -1). If your bank splits Debit and Credit into two columns, combine them into one Amount column.
  • Remove $ signs and thousands commas from amounts. A row whose amount is not a plain number is skipped.
  • Use one of the date formats above. A row with any other date format, such as 13-Sep-2026, still imports but with no date, so it will not show up in any date range.
  • Avoid commas inside names and other text. Quote marks and apostrophes are removed on import, so "Trader Joe's" becomes "Trader Joes".

What imported transactions are like

  • Your transaction rules run on every imported row, just like on synced ones.
  • Imported transactions are not attached to a linked account, so they show no account name or holder, and they never sync.
  • There is no undo for an import. Try a small file first. If you need to remove a batch, see Edit many transactions at once.

Updating transactions with a re-import

If you map the Id column, a row whose ID matches an existing FIYR transaction overwrites that transaction's date, name, amount, category and labels. A file from Export CSV has an ID column, so you can export, edit categories or names in a spreadsheet, and import it back to update them in bulk. Your transaction rules run on these rows too, and quote marks and apostrophes are removed from names, so "Trader Joe's" comes back as "Trader Joes". See Export your transactions.

Common questions

My spending came in as income.

Your file used negative numbers for spending. In FIYR, positive is money out. Delete the imported rows, flip the sign of the amount column, and import again.

Some rows did not import.

Their amount was not a plain number, usually because of a $ sign, a thousands comma, or an empty cell. Fix those and import just those rows.

Imported transactions are missing from my date range.

Their dates were in a format FIYR does not read, so they came in with no date. Use YYYY-MM-DD or month-first MM/DD/YYYY.

Can I import from my phone?

No. Import CSV is only on a computer.

Can I choose which account the transactions belong to?

No. Imported transactions are not tied to a linked account. Use a label to group them, for example the bank's name.
