The income to spending flow chart

The flow chart (a Sankey diagram) shows where your income went: each income category flows into one Income column, which splits into your spending groups and Savings. It sits at the bottom of Cash Flow and inside Month View.

You will also find a compact version in Month View, showing the month you picked there and respecting its Exclude choices. On Cash Flow, Full screen gives the chart the whole window; Exit or Esc returns.

How to read it

  • Left: each Income-group category with money in, such as Payroll Income. If you spent more than you earned, an 💸 OVERSPENT block makes up the difference.
  • Middle: one Income column.
  • Right: your spending groups and Savings. With Groups only off, a fourth column splits each group into its categories, and Savings into your Savings-group categories plus "Unallocated Savings" (income left over that you did not move anywhere) when there is some.
  • A category where refunds outweighed spending is drawn in cyan and marked "(credit)". With Groups only on, the group that contains it is drawn in cyan instead.
  • Click a group or category to open its page. Income, Overspent and Savings are not clickable.

Savings = max(0, income − all spending) + Savings-group spending = max(0, $5,000 − $3,600) + $500 = $1,900.

Drag the slider to raise Food & Dining and watch Savings shrink, then an Overspent block appear.

The four numbers above the chart

FigureHow it is calculated
Total IncomeThe total of your Income-group categories.
Total ExpensesEvery category outside the Income group, with refunds netted inside each category, minus your Savings-group categories.
Net IncomeTotal Income − Total Expenses. Green when positive, red when negative.
Savings RateNet Income ÷ Total Income, with two decimals, or your basis from Settings > Savings Rate.

Savings = max(0, income − all spending) + money moved to Savings-group categories

  • All spending here includes your Savings-group categories, so an 💸 OVERSPENT block appears whenever spending plus savings transfers add up to more than income.
  • Example: $5,000 of income, $3,100 of spending and a $500 transfer to Investments. All spending = $3,600, so Savings = ($5,000 − $3,600) + $500 = $1,900, and Net Income = $5,000 − $3,100 = $1,900.

Ranges and switches

  • The month pill shows last month by default. Hover it to pick the current month or one of the previous 11.
  • YTD covers January 1 to today.
  • Custom lets you pick a year, then Full Year or one month.
  • Groups only (on by default) hides the category column.
  • Budget markers (off by default) draws a dashed green box where a group is under budget and a red line with the overage where it is over. With Groups only off, markers appear on categories that have a budget.

What is included

  • Ignored transactions and uncategorized transactions are left out.
  • Refunds are netted inside their category.
  • Transfers in Income-group categories (such as Incoming Transfer & Deposits) count as income; credit card payments count as spending unless ignored.
  • Pending transactions count.

On a phone the chart is twice the screen width; swipe sideways to see the right-hand side.

If there is nothing to draw for the period you picked, the chart reads "Not enough data to display sankey".

Common questions

Why does it say Overspent when I saved money?

The chart counts money moved to Savings-group categories on the spending side when it checks for overspending. If spending plus savings transfers are more than income, the gap shows as Overspent.

Why is a category shown as "(credit)"?

Refunds in that category were larger than what you spent in it during the period, so it is drawn at the size of the credit.

Why is some spending missing?

Uncategorized and ignored transactions are left out of this chart. Give the transactions a category to include them.
