Forecast: project your net worth
Forecast projects your net worth, liquid assets and debt years ahead, using how fast each asset has really grown, what you saved each month on average over the last three complete months, and how fast your loans are being paid down.
The page is titled "Your Financial Future". It reads your assets and loans from Net Worth, so add those first; see Add a home, car, crypto or other asset and Add a loan or other liability.
The cards
- Net Worth (assets minus liabilities), Liquid Assets (cash and investments), Non-Liquid Assets (real estate and property) and Total Liabilities. Cash, stocks, bonds, crypto and precious metals count as liquid unless you marked the asset otherwise.
- Monthly Income, Monthly Spending, Monthly Savings and Savings Rate, from your last three complete months (the current month is left out).
Monthly Savings = monthly income − monthly spending
- Monthly income = everything that came in over the last 3 complete months ÷ 3, refunds included.
- Monthly spending = everything that went out, minus money moved to Savings-group categories, ÷ 3.
- Savings Rate = monthly savings ÷ monthly income, with one decimal, or your basis from Settings > Savings Rate.
- Ignored transactions are left out.
- Example: $16,500 in and $10,500 out (of which $1,500 went to savings) over three months. Income = $5,500 a month, spending = $3,000, savings = $2,500, rate 45.5%.
Growth and paydown rates
- Each asset's growth rate is the average change between its last six recorded values (or fewer), divided by its current value, treated as one month's growth; the yearly figure is that × 12.
- A rate above 50% a year, up or down, is treated as 0% and marked with "!", because it is almost always a data jump rather than growth.
- Click any rate to type your own. Your overrides are marked "*" and "x" resets them.
- Each loan pays down by its average monthly change in balance, which you can also override, with an estimate of the months left. Loans with an interest rate, term and original amount follow their amortization schedule instead, unless you typed your own paydown rate.
How the projection works
Each month into the future, every asset grows at its own rate, your monthly savings (plus any what-if amount) is added to liquid assets, and loans are paid down, never below $0. If you have no liquid assets, savings are not added anywhere.
- Pick 1Y, 5Y, 10Y (the default), 20Y or 30Y. The highlights show Net Worth, Liquid Assets and Remaining Debt at the end of that span.
- Key Milestones shows when you reach Debt-Free (debt of $1,000 or less), $100K Liquid, $500K Net Worth and $1M Net Worth.
- What if you saved more? adds $0 to $3,000 a month in $50 steps and shows the extra wealth it builds. The slider is not saved.
Common questions
Why is my Monthly Income higher than my pay?
Forecast counts everything that came in over the last three complete months, including refunds and transfers back from savings.
Why does an asset show 0% with a "!"?
Its measured growth was more than 50% a year up or down, which usually means a one-off value jump. Click the rate to set your own.
Does the current month count?
No. Forecast uses the last three complete months only.
