Transfers and credit card payments

FIYR ignores credit card payments for you when it can match both sides. Transfers between your own accounts usually need one step from you: ignore them, or move them to Internal Transfer.

Credit card payments

When you pay a card from checking, two transactions appear: money out of checking and money in on the card. Counted as is, the payment would be both spending and income.

FIYR labels both sides ignore automatically when they arrive and:

  • the amounts are exactly opposite ($1,204.33 out, $1,204.33 in),
  • they are within 3 business days of each other, and
  • at least one side is in the Credit Card Payment category.

If only one of your accounts is linked, or the amounts do not match exactly, FIYR cannot pair them. Use the Ignore suggestions below, or label the payment ignore yourself.

Transfers between your own accounts

Your bank usually reports a transfer to savings as the Transfer category, and the incoming side as Incoming Transfer & Deposits. Left alone, the outgoing side counts as spending and the incoming side as income. Pick one fix:

Label both sides ignoreThe transfer disappears from every total and page. Both accounts are linked and you do not need to see transfers anywhere.
Move the outgoing side to Internal Transfer, ignore the incoming sideNot spending, and it still shows as money saved, for example in the Savings section of the Budget page. You want to see how much you moved to savings.

Investment contributions that your bank reports as investment transfers land in Investments (also in the Savings group) and are already left out of spending.

Use the Ignore suggestions

  1. On a computer, click ⋯ next to the date buttons and choose Review.
  2. Open the Ignore tab. Suggested Ignore Pairs lists money out and money in with the same amount within 3 days.
  3. Click Ignore on each real pair, or Skip if it is a coincidence. Ignore N Pairs applies all of them.

Make it automatic

A rule handles future transfers as they sync. For example: Name Contains "Transfer to Savings" → New Category Internal Transfer. The Rule recipes article has the full set.

Loan and card balances

A payment to a mortgage or car loan is spending (for example Mortgage or Auto Payment). To track a loan's balance, see Add a loan or other liability.

Common questions

Why is my credit card payment counted as spending?

FIYR could not match it with the credit on the card, often because the card is not linked or the amounts differ. Open ⋯ > Review > Ignore, or label the payment ignore.

Why do transfers to my savings show as spending?

Banks report them as Transfer, which counts as spending. Move them to Internal Transfer or label them ignore, and add a rule so new ones follow.

Should I use ignore or Internal Transfer?

Either one stops a transfer counting as spending, and on the Transactions page your Cash Flow and savings rate come out the same. Use Internal Transfer if you also want the money to show as saved, for example in the Savings section of the Budget page. Use ignore if you want the transfer gone from every number.

Why did my incoming transfer count as income?

Every incoming amount counts as income unless it is ignored. Label the incoming side of a transfer between your own accounts ignore.
